What is Quilting? Things to Know About Quilting

Quilting is a traditional Vietnamese sewing technique used to create soft, warm, and luxurious products. This technique is done by stitching together layers of fabric, creating an outer shell and an inner layer of cotton. The cotton layer can be made from various materials, including natural cotton, synthetic cotton, or feathers.

The steps involved in creating a quilted fabric include:

1. Preparing the materials

  • Fabric: Fabric used for quilting can be cotton, linen, silk, etc., depending on the purpose of use. The fabric should be of moderate thickness, not too thin or too thick to be easily sewn and the cotton not to be skewed.
  • Cotton: Cotton used for quilting can be natural cotton, synthetic cotton, or feathers. Natural cotton has high softness and breathability, but is quite expensive. Synthetic cotton is cheaper than natural cotton, but the softness and breathability are not as good. Feathers have high softness and warmth, but are quite expensive and easy to fluff.
  • Needles and thread: Needles and thread used for quilting must be specialized needles and thread for quilting. The needle must have a sharp tip and a small nose to easily pass through the layers of fabric. The thread must be strong enough to withstand the pulling force of the quilting stitches.

2. Cutting fabric

  • Cut the front fabric: Cut the front fabric to the size of the product, plus about 1 cm for the hem.
  • Cut the back fabric: Cut the back fabric to the size of the product, plus about 1 cm for the hem.

3. Sewing fabric

  • Place the two layers of fabric together, with the wrong sides of the fabric facing each other.
  • Sew a hem around the product, 0.5 cm from the edge of the fabric.

4. Spreading cotton

  • Spread the cotton evenly between the two layers of fabric, so that the cotton fits snugly within the product’s frame.
  • Use your hands to press lightly to spread the cotton evenly and tightly.

5. Quilting

  • Use a needle and thread to stitch the quilting stitches diagonally or horizontally, so that the cotton layer is firmly fixed between the two layers of fabric.
  • The distance between the quilting stitches can be adjusted according to your preference and purpose of use.

6. Finishing

  • Cut off excess fabric around the product.
  • Sew up any open quilting stitches.

Some tips for quilting:

  • The cotton layer must be spread evenly and tightly, so that it does not skew.
  • The quilting stitches must be sewn evenly and firmly, so that they are not loose.
